Warnings

Two deaths here in 2021 and 2022, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife says injuries are not uncommon. Long swims to the exit points, submerged shelves off the walls, no cell service and a long way from help. The site was closed for a period after the 2022 death.

Access

Two Buttes State Wildlife Area off US-287 south of Lamar. Entering any SWA requires a Colorado hunting or fishing license or an SWA pass. No maintained trail or designated swim area; park near the dam and walk down.

Best conditions

June through early September. Water is spring-fed and cold even in high summer.
