A small alpine reservoir at the top of American Fork Canyon under Mount Timpanogos, 45 minutes from Salt Lake. Rock ledges on the far shore get used for short jumps on hot afternoons. It is snowmelt held at 6,400 feet, so the swim is brief no matter how hot the valley is.

Warnings

Heights and depths here are not measured, and the reservoir is drawn down for irrigation, so the shoreline you jumped from in July may be over rocks in September. Cold-water shock is the real risk at this elevation; it takes strong swimmers the same as everyone else. The canyon road is busy and the lot fills early on weekends.

Access

Top of American Fork Canyon (UT-92), Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest — a recreation fee applies for the canyon. Paved parking at the reservoir, day use only, no lifeguards. The ledges are around the shoreline away from the beach.

Best conditions

Late July through August, after the canyon opens fully and the water has had time to warm — relatively speaking.
