Warnings

Cliff jumping at Nelson's Landing is prohibited by the park compendium, with fines up to $5,000 and rangers who patrol the cove, so be careful. The upper walls have rock at their base; a jumper from 50 feet needed rescue, and a 19-year-old drowned off the underwater shelf in September 2024. Cold water, strong current and a 4x4-only road out.

Access

Lake Mead National Recreation Area (entry fee). Nelson Road through the ghost town, then Eagle Wash Road; the last 1.4 miles is a 4x4 sand wash. No services, no shade.

Best conditions

May, June and September. Midsummer heat is dangerous on the walk out and the river stays cold year-round.
