Warnings
Water is barely above freezing early in the season and cold-shock is real after a hot hike. A hiker fell 100 feet from the cliffs above the lake in 2024; stay off the tall walls.
Access
Lake Serene trailhead off Mount Index Road (Northwest Forest Pass). About 4 miles and 2,000 feet up on a stair-heavy trail.
Best conditions
August and September after the snow leaves the shoreline.
