The Missoula swimming hole: a deep pool on the Blackfoot at the Johnsrud Park fishing access, with 20-foot cliffs across the main channel that locals jump all summer. You swim the river to reach the rock.

Warnings

You have to cross the main current to get to the cliffs; a swimmer went missing here in a recent summer. Strong swimmers only, and never at spring flows.

Access

Johnsrud Park Road off MT 200 about 15 miles east of Missoula (FWP fishing access site, free). Park at the FAS and walk down to the river; the cliffs are on the far bank.

Best conditions

Late July through August once runoff drops.
